This Week: Five Events You Need to Know (October 13)

Bavaria’s elections, United States division, Hurricane Michael, and more

Here are five of the most important news stories this week, as well as relevant links to the full articles and videos here on theTrumpet.com.

Bavaria’s Elections Could Shake German Politics—Again

On Sunday, the German state of Bavaria will go to the polls.

Forecasts of the polls suggest that the state’s own conservative political party—the Christian Social Union—may win only 33 percent of the vote. It would be its worst result since 1950. And it would have far-reaching ramifications within Germany’s flimsy coalition government.

Despite U.S. Warning, India Finalizes $5 Billion Weapons Deal With Russia

Following meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 5, the two nations finalized a deal for India to buy Russia’s advanced S-400 air defense system.

India’s finalization of the S-400 deal came despite warnings from the United States that the purchase could result in U.S. sanctions being placed on India. It showed, as Bible prophecy indicates, that India may be willing to jeopardize its close relationship with America in favor of its relationship with Russia.

U.S. Political Division Worst Since Post-Civil War Reconstruction Era

The Senate vote to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court revealed deep political divisions in the United States. One Democrat and 49 Republicans voted to confirm Kavanaugh, while 48 Democrats voted against him. The last justice to be confirmed by such a narrow margin was Stanley Matthews, who was confirmed by a single vote in 1881, a short 16 years after the end of the Civil War.

“[P]olarization has been steadily getting worse since the early 1970s,” observed Michigan State University associate professor Zachary Neal. “Today, we’ve hit the ceiling on polarization. At these levels, it will be difficult to make any progress on social or economic policies.”

As President Abraham Lincoln famously quoted Jesus Christ, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

Yale Study: Likely U.S. Illegal Immigrant Population Is 22 Million

A recent Department of Homeland Security report showed a 38 percent increase among families entering the United States illegally from July to August. Overall, nearly 47,000 people were stopped at the Mexican border in August, up 17 percent from the month before.

“These numbers are a result of our failure to do what is necessary to control the border,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, in an interview with Fox News.

Many on the radical left desire open borders, and the Trump administration seems powerless to stop the influx of illegal immigrants.

Open borders are actually one of the curses God said He would send upon the U.S. if the people of the nation turned away from His law.

Hurricane Michael Not a ‘Natural’ Disaster

Hurricane Michael hit Florida on October 10, and it devastated property, claimed 13 lives—and shattered records. The category 4 storm was the strongest hurricane to strike the United States mainland in more than 25 years, and the fourth-most powerful hurricane to strike the U.S. in recorded history.

Our article “Hurricane Michael Not a ‘Natural’ Disaster” and our free booklet Why ‘Natural’ Disasters?  explain why the God of love that many people acknowledge allows such monstrous storms as Hurricane Michael.
